Network-Attached Storage

ATTACHMENT
Computers access disk storage in two ways:
1) Host attached via an I/O port
2) Network attached via a network connection
D ISK

It is a device which has a special purpose storage system
that is access remotely over a data network (LAN) .
rather Than over a local connection (such as a bus)
-> Remotely attaching to file systems

They typically provide access to files using network file
sharing protocols such as NFS, SMB/CIFS, or AFP.
NFS and CIFS are common protocols
NFS (network file system) for UNIX system
CIFS (common internet file system) for windows system
This two protocols is type of : Remote Procedure Call
(RPC)

NAS connect to network via internet such as
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)

:

NAS not provide just storage data but backing up and
sharing files across your network.

NAS as a convenient and easy method of sharing files
among multiple pc’s computers

NAS allows greater sharing of information especially
between different operating systems such as Unix and
Mac

Advantages : faster data access , easier control, and
simple implementation

:

NAS systems contain one or more hard
disks, often arranged into logical, redundant
storage containers or RAID arrays.

NAS provides both storage and a file system
.File System managed by NAS

NAS is easier to do than other storage
access method like a Storage area network.
