Skeletal and
Muscular System
BY ADAM, TYLER, CHRISTOPHER AND KENDRICK
Skeletal System Functions

Support : Our bones provide the rigidity we need to function

Protection : The rigidity of our bones allow them to protect our
internal organs from damage, for example the rib cage and the
skull.

Movement : Without the strength of our bones we wouldn’t be able
to move our muscles are anchored to our bones.

Storage : Our bones are a storehouse for fat and certain essential
minerals.

Blood Cell Formation : Most of our blood components are made in
the bones.
Skeletal System Cells

Osteongenic Cells : Produce osteoblasts

Osteoblasts : Are bone building cells.

Osteocytes : Are mature bone cells and are the main cells in bone
tissue

Osteoclasts : Huge cells derived from monocytes

Resorption : Is the breakdown of the bone

Muscular System

The 650 muscles in the body not only support movement — controlling
walking, talking, sitting, standing, eating and other daily functions that
we consciously perform — but also help to maintain posture and
circulate blood and other substances throughout the body, among
other functions.

The nervous system controls the actions of the muscles, although some
muscles, including the cardiac muscle, can function independently.

Skeletal muscles are the only voluntary muscle tissue in the human body
and control every action that a person consciously performs. Most
skeletal muscles are attached to two bones across a joint, so the
muscle serves to move parts of those bones closer to each other.

The heart’s natural pacemaker is made of cardiac muscle that signals
other cardiac muscles to contract.
Muscular System Cells

Different types of cells: A) skeletal muscle cell (rhabdomyocyte) voluntary, affect locomotion

B) cardiac muscle cell (kardiomyocyte) - involuntary, structure is
similar to skeletal muscle cell

C) smooth muscle cell (leiomyocyte) - involuntary, walls of organs
and in skin
