THE Voice of the Regions
Attica Region, Greece
Attica is an historical region of Greece which includes Athens, the current capital of Greece.
The historical region is centered on the Attic peninsula, which projects into the Aegean Sea.
The Attica region, the modern administrative region of Greece, is more extensive than the
historical region and includes several islands and part of the Peloponnese.
Attica is a triangular peninsula jutting into the Aegean Sea. It is naturally divided to the north
from Boeotia by long Kithairon mountain range. To the west, it is bordered by the sea and
the canal of Corinth. Mountains separate the peninsula into the plains of Pedias, Mesogaia,
and Thriasion.

The relevant proposed participants’ main activities include: (a) basic and applied research,
(b) industrial and R&D activities, and (c) policy formulation on issues relevant to transport,
environment and health.
Participation in the THE ISSUE project will act as a catalyst in this direction and will give this
cluster‐to‐be access to similar activities at a European level and a forum for exchanging
experiences relating to both research and practice.
Exposure to similar initiatives and ongoing activities will bring added value to the proposed
partnership and will deepen and broaden our understanding or relevant activities at a EU
level.
The regional authority (municipality of Piraeus) is highly motivated in the direction of
forming partnerships with relevant research institutions and industries interested in the
issues addressed by the THE ISSUE project, and to this end they have initiated several
relevant activities.
