What is a republic? A republic is a system of government in which citizens elect leaders to represent them. 2. Why was the Roman government divided into three parts? It created a system of checks and balances so that each group has limited power. 3. How did the Roman government change during emergencies? A dictator who had absolute power was appointed. His term was limited to 6 months. Directions: Ancient Roman society had two main social classes. Tell who makes up each class and describe their roles in society. The Patrician Class: wealthy, landowners descended from earliest settlers of Rome. Only patricians were members of Senate. Only Patricians were members of Senate. They held important military and religious positions. The Plebian Class: All Roman citizens except the Patricians. They were the farmers, soldiers, merchants, and craftworkers.
