Components of the Pronto Networks UniFi OSS
1. Introduction
This document describes the various components of a Pronto UniFi OSS. The Pronto Networks UniFi
OSS is deployed using a group of servers. These functions include a Web Services Server for
authenticating users, a Customer Portal server furnishing web pages to clients, Operations Support
Services server for other back office tasks, and a Database Server for core data management functions.
These functions can be grouped on a single file server or can be deployed on a distributed configuration
for scalability and performance considerations.
2. OSS Installations
The OSS is typically deployed in data centers in the following general network topology:
We assume that the target customer has the following servers to run the pre-existing operation. In case if
these servers are not available, we recommend that these basic network services are put in place or be
outsourced from a provider, who can modify the contents as needed.



DNS Server
Web Server
Mail Server
For offering WiFi services, a DNS Server is required to add sub-domain registration for different
components of the Pronto UniFi OSS. Primary and Secondary DNS services configured on two different
networks for redundancy purposes are recommended.
An existing Web server can also host as an image server (storing patches files and images) for the
Pronto Hotspot Service Controllers (PSC) or Pronto Hotzone Service Gateways (PSG).
A mail server will be required to support Wireless Services mails such as [email protected],
[email protected], [email protected] etc. Mail Servers can also be used to support the
SMTP proxy feature for the customer, if desired.

3. Data Center Requirements
A data center is recommended to support the following features:
a. Minimum 2 Mb/s or E1 Internet bandwidth, burstable speed up to 10 Mb/s
b. Necessary network fault tolerance, and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) availability
c. Necessary network security (Firewall, IDS etc) in place, as per the organization's policy
d. Necessary physical security (Biometric, lock and key etc) in place, as per the organization's policy
e. Should provide necessary IP address range for servers and network devices
4. Hardware Core Components
Element Management
Web services server
 Handles all initialization, authentication and logout requests from PSCs/PSGs in the field
 Delivers initial page templates (.html files) to PSCs/PSGs for login and success pages
 Uses java application server (Oracle 9ias (version 9.04)) in concert with the Pronto
application
 Requires robust memory allotments and CPU, moderate hard drive
 Minimum requirements: 2 GB RAM, 2.0 GHz Xeon, 24 GB Hard Drive
 Recommended requirements: 4 GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Dual Xeon, 36 GB Hard Drive
OSS/Customer Portal
Operation Support Services/Business Support Services (OSS/BSS) and Customer Portal Server
 Serves all OSS/BSS administration pages (wisp administration, NOC administration)
 Serves all registration pages, Web Portal for online purchases and Customer portal for
usage monitoring and account management.
 Uses java application server (Oracle 9ias) in concert with the Pronto application.
 Requires moderate memory allotments and CPU, moderate hard drive
 Minimum requirements: 2 GB RAM, 2.0 GHz Xeon, 18 GB Hard Drive
 Recommended: 4 GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Dual Xeon, 36 GB Hard Drive
Database
Oracle Database Server (Standard / Enterprise version 8.1.7 or above)
 Repository for all production data
 Stores all customer and administrative data
 Users Oracle Database application
 Requires moderate memory allotments and CPU, large hard drive
 Minimum requirements: 2 GB RAM, 2.0 GHz Xeon, 36 GB Hard Drive
 Recommended:
4 GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Dual Xeon, 70 GB Raid Array Hard Drive
Images
Images Server (optional, existing web server can be used for this purpose)
 Requires web server and ftp server
 Requires moderate memory allotments and CPU, moderate hard drive
 Minimum requirements: 512 MB RAM, 2.0 GHz Xeon, 18 GB Hard Drive
 Recommended:
1 GB RAM, 2.0 GHz Xeon, 36 GB Hard Drive
5. Software Components

The Pronto UniFi OSS includes an embedded Oracle Database licensing as well as the Oracle
Application Server licenses as a complete package. The Pronto UniFi OSS also includes an embedded
license for NAVIS RADIUS.
Other Required Components for operation of a UniFi OSS License:
SSL certificates:
Phc.example.com,
register.example.com.
A SSL certificate should be obtained from a recognized Certificate Authority (CA) for the user access
screen. The operator needs to establish a contract with a known CA for generating signed certificates.
Some well recognized CAs are www.versign.com or www.thawte.com, but others are available.
Generally the UniFi OSS will need at least 2 SSL certificates with an approximate annual cost of $250 per
certificate.
Mail Service:
The Pronto UniFi OSS sends email notification to the users on following cases
- During the purchase of subscription plan through [email protected]
- During the purchase of pre-paid on web portal through [email protected] and
[email protected]
- ‘Forget Password’ user requests, through [email protected]
The Mail Server should be configured with these e-mail accounts. These accounts should be accessed
from Pronto UniFi OSS to send mail outside.
Credit Card Authentication Payment Processing:
The Pronto UniFi OSS currently incorporates Payment Processing API with Verisign Payment Processing
PayFlow Pro Gateway. The Wireless Operator should have a valid account with Verisign to establish live
and test credit card authentication. For more details on this please contact your Account Manager.
