Professor Toby Walsh University of New South Wales, Australia Tuesday 26 April 18.30–19.30 LT1 Kramer Building, Middle Campus, UCT R84 (full fee); R42 (staff) RSVP 021 650 2888 or [email protected]. A rtificial Intelligence (or AI) is in the zeitgeist. The Chief Economist of the Bank of England has predicted that AI could destroy 50% of jobs in the UK. Thousands of researchers have signed an open letter predicting that AI could transform warfare and lead to an arms race of ‘killer robots’. And Stephen Hawking and others have predicted that AI could end humanity itself. What should we make of all these predictions? And what should we do to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all? Toby Walsh is Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of New South Wales and leads a research group at Data61, Australia’s Centre of Excellence for ICT Research. This public lecture is being presented by the Centre for Extra Mural Studies at UCT in association with the 15th International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. The conference will see leading experts on AI gather at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 25 to 29 April. www.summerschool.uct.ac.za * As a partially self-funding entity, we are obliged to charge a small fee for extension lectures.
