Medical Technologist (PC8, 16-month contract) Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM) Faculty of Health Sciences HIV and tuberculosis are the most pressing public health problems in South Africa. Applications are invited to join a group of researchers funded by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. This 16-month full-time contract post will be based at the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine within the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cape Town. The starting date is negotiable, but preferably not later than 1 October 2013. Requirements: The ideal candidate will be a committed and well organised medical technologist Registered with the Health Professions Council of SA Experience in working in sterile Biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratory conditions. At least 2 years’ experience in a medical laboratory Willingness to work with samples from patients infected with M.tuberculosis and HIV is essential. Appropriate safety training will be provided. Flexibility to perform new duties in the laboratory as required Formal duties will not exceed 37.5 hours per week, but flexible hours will be required. Advantageous: Experience in Immunology and Microbiology Experience in any of the mentioned techniques is advantageous, but it is not essential, as full training will be provided. Responsibilities: Process blood samples, including separation of serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), cryo-preservation of samples, setting up short term cultures, QUANTIFERON assays, isolation of RNA. Record storage of processed samples and database entry Maintain an inventory of all frozen samples in the laboratory (freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks) Perform general laboratory maintenance Ensure adherence to Health and Safety procedures Assist with consumables stock control Attend laboratory meetings The annual cost of employment is between R135 342 and R252 318.
