Mariana Ocean Trench case study
Mariana Plate
Location: The Mariana trench is located in the Pacific Ocean. It forms the boundary between two
tectonic plates.
Formation: The Pacific Plate (Denser), is subducted (thrust) beneath the Mariana Plate that lies to
the west. Both plates are Oceanic plates. They are found along destructive margins. As the oceanic
crust sinks below the continental crust, during the process of subduction, a deep trench is created.
Key facts:
Mount Everest (8,895m) fits easily into the Mariana trench.
It is 1500 miles long.
It is 43 miles wide.
It is nearly 7 miles deep.
You may be asked to draw a sketch of the Trench and describe how it is formed.
REVISE THE ABOVE.
