In 1503 Pope Julius II
commissioned
Michelangelo to
paint the ceiling of
the Sistine Chapel.
Context: Europe is
transitioning from Late Middle
Ages to Early Renaissance. The
protestant reformation and
the divide of the Papacy are
happening
Artist: Michelangelo is an
Italian sculptor, painter,
and architect that was
known as the best artist of
his time and one of the
greatest to ever live.
Form: There is six tall
windows that form a
series of pendentives
between them. It is
roofed by a flattened
barrel vault.
The Sistine Chapel is
named after Pope Sixtus IV
who had it constructed to
replace the old chapel
Cappella Maggiore.
It took Michelangelo a
little over four years to
finish over 5000 square
feet of frescoes.
The Sistine Chapel is
located in Vatican City,
also the home of the
Pope.
Function: This chapel
is used as the Pope’s
personal chapel and
as the location for
elections of new
popes
