Warm up: NATIVE VS. INVASIVE pg. 307 INFER: 1. What is a native species? An organism that is found in its original habitat 2. What is an invasive species? An organism that is found in a different habitat; can negatively affect native species GATHER INFO: 3. What are the 3 invasive species mentioned on this page? Kudzu plant, walking catfish, zebra mussel 4. What is one advantage and one disadvantage of the kudzu plant? To prevent soil erosion/ It takes resources away from other plants like sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide 5. Why is the destructive zebra so destructive? It takes nutrients/food away from native mussels 6. How might the walking catfish affect the native species of its habitat? Creates competition with the native species DESCRIBE: 7. How does the competition between invasive and native species affect a food web? The invasive species would consume food resources and the predator may die out. The food web will fall apart. RELATE: 8. Give an example of competition for a food resource that may occur in an ecosystem near you. Be sure to list the two organisms and what they are competing for!
