INTRODUCED AND INVASIVE SPECIES
2012-2013
HOW DO WE REFER TO GROUPS OF
ORGANISMS?

Organism
 One

individual living thing
Population
 Group
of organisms of the same species, that live
in the same area

Community
 Group
of different species that live together in the
same area
NATIVE SPECIES
those that evolved within the ecosystems
where they are found.
 Natural controls to limit:

 Predators
 Parasites
 Resources
INTRODUCED SPECIES
species are those that are brought into an area,
either on purpose or accidentally, by people.
 Can come from one continent to another
 Can be non-invasive or invasive

INVASIVE SPECIES
a species that has moved into an area and
reproduced so aggressively that it has replaced
some of the original species.
 Definitely do not belong in ecosystem

COMMON CHARACTARISTICS
Ability to reproduce sexually and asexually
 Fast growth
 Rapid reproduction
 High dispersal ability
 tolerance of wide environmental ranges

KUDZU
Pueraria lubata
 Introduced in southern U.S.
 Can grow up to one foot a day

waterways, and lakes

EMERALD ASH BORER
Agrilus Plannipennus
 Eastern United States
