SS9 – Crossroads
Nations4 – Peoples of the Plateau
People of the Plateau
The first peoples of the Plateau region of B.C. include the
Chilcotin, Lilloet, Niaka Pamux, Nicola, Shuswap,
Okanagon and the Ktunaya.
These peoples are thought to have originally come from 2
different regions (the North and the South Plains), each
looking for a better climate in which to live.
Most of the Plateau peoples wintered in Pit houses.
Large pits were dug and then covered with log rafters.
Pit houses were used for a few winters and then
abandoned.
The Plateau peoples diet relied heavily upon the fall
salmon run as well as local game and local plants, roots
and berries.
The Interior peoples shared similar lifestyles to that of
both the Coastal and Plains peoples.
