Hero Myths

Definition of hero in mythology: In mythology and legend, a man or woman, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage
and strength, celebrated for his or her bold exploits, and favored by the gods. He or she seeks some significant goal or boon for his people.
Often the quest involves archetypal stages such as the miraculous birth, the search for truth or riches or a lost loved one, a struggle with
monsters, and the descent to the underworld.

Prometheus, the wisest titan whose name means
forethought.
Iapetus, a titan, is his father
Quest – The
journey the hero
takes to complete
a specific task.
-Zeus gave Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus the job
of creating man
-Epimetheus gave all the good gifts to the animals
-Prometheus feels sorry for humans, so he decides to steal
fire from the gods to give to man
-Athena helps him
-Zeus punishes Prometheus, chains him to a the Caucassus
Mountains and has an eagle eat his liver daily
-Herakles finally frees Prometheus

Tragic Flaw
Heroic Qualities: Prometheus has many qualities we
admire: wisdom, courage, persistence; he stands up to Zeus
and won’t give in
Tragic Flaw: He steals fire from Zeus and he is punished
for that. We do admire him because he helped man, but it
is the flaw that brings him pain and suffering

-Prometheus has divine parents, his father is a titan
-He goes on a quest, he is called to help mankind and he
does this at great cost to himself, he endures great suffering
-Athena is his helper, she helps him get fire from the hearth
of the gods
