Transcript
DNA/Strawberry Lab
Write the question and answers on your own paper. You may use the textbook and/or a dictionary
1. Draw a plant cell. (If you have forgotten please refer to page 226)
2. Label the Nucleus and DNA
3. Define:
a. DNA
b. Chromosomes
c. Lipid
d. Enzyme
e. Cell membrane
f. Nuclear membrane
g. percipitate
h. soluble
i. extract
j. pH
k. protein
l. gene
m. trait
4. Have you ever wondered what DNA looks like? You are going to break apart the cell membrane
of a strawberry and separate the DNA from the nucleus. Strawberries are a good source of DNA
because they have 8 copies of each type of chromosomes. This large number of chromosomes
will filter out of your solution and you will actually see DNA. Write a brief description of what
you think the DNA will look like.
_____________________________________________________________________________
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS AFTER YOU FINISH THE LAB:
1. What was the purpose of mashing the strawberry?
2. Why did you think we added soap solution to the strawberry
3. What was the purpose of adding alcohol to the mixture?
4. Why is it important for scientists to be able to remove DNA from an organism? Give two
specific examples of when doing so might be useful
5. Is there DNA in your food? Why? How do you know?
6. Look back at your plant cell drawing. Remember that genes are found on chromosomes and
that genes control traits. Give at least two examples of traits that are expressed in the
strawberry.
