Seeking God’s Grace The gospel says ~ You and I were created for a relationship with God ~ Our sin separated us from that relationship ~ There is nothing that we can do to reconcile this relationship on our own Seeking God’s Grace The gospel says ~ Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin ~ Jesus rose from the dead that we might have life, now and eternally ~ Jesus offers eternal life (or a reconciled relationship) to those who will repent of their sin by placing faith in Jesus Christ Seeking God’s Grace We love to make an outward showing in the flesh of our spirituality, but we don’t run to the cross as our answer for all that we need to grow in holiness and spiritual maturity. Seeking God’s Grace Now that you are saved, don’t desert the cross for some other “gospel” that you can control, see, and measure by external standards In order to seek God’s grace we must boast only in the cross. Seeking God’s Grace What does it mean to boast in the cross? ~ We fear God, not man. ~ We have freedom to love others. ~ We bear the fruit of the Spirit. Seeking God’s Grace ~ Fearing God, not man • Pleasing God – serving man, not pleasing man and serving God (c.f. Acts 17:25) Seeking God’s Grace ~ Fearing God, not man • Pleasing God – serving man, not pleasing man and serving God (c.f. Acts 17:25) • Associating with the cross. • Adopting a posture of repentance. Seeking God’s Grace ~ Freedom to love others. • Live by the “law” of love that grows out of faith. • New desires producing new life. Seeking God’s Grace Take Away – what does this look like? ~ Brokenness and Vulnerability • No longer pride and defensiveness ~ Forgiveness • In light of God’s great forgiveness to us we forgive others. Seeking God’s Grace Take Away – what does this look like? ~ Extending grace toward others • Gospel boldness to go to places and people we would normally shy away from.
