The Art of Persuasion Final Task: Make a Television Ad!
It’s time to show what you have learned about how advertisers communicate
messages to consumers! Your job will be to create a television commercial to
convince consumers to buy your product, or to convince them of an idea.
You will be writing a script, casting roles, and using costumes and props. You may
record your commercial as a video OR present it live.
You are also expected to demonstrate your understanding of the topics from this unit.
Here are the assignment requirements:



Use at least TWO techniques used by advertisers that we learned about in class
(examples: emotional appeal, bandwagon, facts, endorsements, ideal family,
etc.  consult class handouts for complete list)
Make your commercial appeal to at least one of the omitted groups discussed
in class
Once your commercial has been presented, your group will answer the
following question: how does constantly being surrounded by advertising have
an impact on you?
o Describe at least THREE ways you are impacted
o Consider potential positives and negatives

1) Think about the age group, race, and gender of the people who are most likely to watch
your commercial Give specific examples of how you created an inclusive commercial.
2) What effect do you think advertising has on you, especially when we know that
advertisements are everywhere? Do you think about commercials after you have seen
them? Does advertising make you more interested in products, or do you already know
what products you want?
3) Is advertising ever unfair? When can advertising actually be harmful to a group of
people? Explain your reasoning.
