Although Mars and Jupiter orbit the same sun, both planets could hardly be
more different. Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, is smaller than Earth. Jupiter,
the fifth planet from the Sun, is by far the largest planet in the solar system.

A tiny flicker in Earth’s dark sky,
Mars is a globe of red mountains high. 58

Mars, like Earth, has a solid surface covered in mountains, hills, plains, valleys,
and ridges. Its tallest mountain towers 15 miles high. A thin layer of carbon dioxide
surrounds the planet. Mars is a cold, dry place. It does, however, have some water
in the form of ice at its poles. The planet is similar enough to Earth that it is possible
that people may venture there someday.

A trip to Jupiter, on the other hand, is not likely. Jupiter is made up of several
layers of boiling-hot gases and liquids. It has a rocky core, but most of the planet
is magnetic liquid hydrogen. The visible part of Jupiter is its colorful cloud layer,
made mostly of frozen ammonia and water.

Mars and Jupiter may be neighbors, but the similarity ends there.

Two planets all on Earth can see,
As different as neighbors can ever be.
Jupiter glows bright with colossal mass,
A globe of stormy, swirling gas. Title:
