BEGINNINGS
• Born on September 23, 1926 in Hamlet,
North Carolina
• Came from a musical family
• Influenced by Count Basie & Lester Young
• Studied at Ornstein School of Music,
Philadelphia 1943
• Stationed in Hawaii with the Navy:
Regularly performed & produced first
recording with a quartet of sailors
CAREER
• Granoff School of Music, Philadelphia
• “Groundbreaking” & “revolutionary” saxophonist, band leader, and composer
• Popular albums include: “Giant Steps,” “My Favorite Things,” & “A Love Supreme”
• Worked with Dizzy Gillepsie, Duke Ellington, & Miles Davis
• Introduced new techniques and styles of playing to the world of Jazz
• Fired by Ellington due to drug use

CONTINUING THE LEGACY
• Many TV shows and movies have used his
music.
• The Cosby Show, NYPD Blue, Days of Our
Lives, Mr. Holland's Opus
• 1995 honored with a postage stamp
• Universal Studios named a street after him
• In 2001 "My Favorite Things" listed as one
of the top songs of the century.
