Letter of recommendation for the Roger L6ron Award 2016
Dear Sir,
Town Most is the capital city of the Most District, situated between the Central Bohemian
Uplands and the Ore Mountains, approximately 77 kn northwest of Prague along the Bilina
River and southwest of Usti nad Labem. The name Most means "bridge" inCzech. The town, which
was named after the system of bridges that crossed the swamps in this area in the 10th century, is
now mostly known for its heavy industry.
Most lies at the heart of the northern Bohemian lignite-mining region and serves as an
important industrial railway junction. During the latter half of the 20th century, Most was
considered to be one of the most polluted coal mining towns in communist Czechoslovakia. Most's
other industries includes textile, ceramics, steel, and chernicals. Foreign mining operations continue
to operate in the area in the 21st century. At the present time, there still have been such an opinion
among the public of the Most region even among the public of the whole Czech Republic that the
environment in this area is being damaged and polluted much more than in the majority of other
areas of the Czech Republic. This opinion is well-founded in many directions, but the
environmental condition has been demonstrably improved during few past years, mainly in the
areas of air cleanness or land reclamation. These facts are known in professional walks, but without
their following sufficient introduction to the laic public.

- the EC is in a close relation to local authorities and. industrial
companies. Thus the EC can mediate an informal discussion between these subjects and the wide
public,

The effects of the EC activities ensures an easy access to environmental information,
increasing acquaintance of inhabitants in the environmental area, assurance of the effective flow of
environmental information between the public on the one hand and authorities and companies on
the other hand, supporting perception of the Most region like an area where the environment is
being demonstrably improved and supporting creation of a new, more attractive image of the Most
region and that is why this region has become more attractive for tourists and investors, an relief for
the public administration in the area of providing information, and rise of an original project for the
Czech Republic that will demonstrate the effective fulfilling the intend of the Act No.12311998 on
the right to know information on the environment,
The Council of the town as one of the highest organs of the statutory town self-government
and especially the Council's department of the Environment widely cooperate with the EC and
highly appreciates its activities and their impact on the environmental feeling of the public and
especially the young generation of the town. Our cooperation has been running for more than 15
years and the results can be clearly seen in all areas and aspects of the life of town.
For the above listed reasons the town Most and Lord Mayor of the city Most recommends
