Due 1/14 on the half day
A town on top of a 300 foot hill needs a low cost method to transport water up the hill to
supply the town. There can be only one motor and less than five moving parts. This town
has a stream down below it but the town is isolated at a high elevation (no available water
lines) and the town has limited funds. Assume water is free from a stream that runs year
round.
The ground water is reasonably deep and drilling is prohibitive.. Remember non purified
water should cost about $0.15 per gallon.(Water and Ice sells purified for $0.25 per
gallon.)
Your device needs to be able to pay for itself over 20 years (from profits) to supply a
town of 1000 people. Industrial electricity is $0.17 a kilowatt from Hydropower at a local
dam..
Remember water is heavy and you have to transport it up in as simple a way as possible
to the town. The bill per person must be presented with a 25% profit margin to the water
utility which does not include the loan to build the device.
Deliverable includes
1. a proposal on equipment.
2. Calculations to transport water up hill at a minimum
3. Energy waste from moving parts and electrical parts.
4. Efficiency of equipment
5. Any side benefits
6. Estimated building / installation costs.
7. Total cost over 20 years per gallon to transport water and pay off equipment
investment. The average person uses 15 gallons per day.
8. The bill the average town inhabitant can expect.
9. Assume water is free from a stream that runs year round
