God provides a Lamb.

INTRODUCTION:
 Last week we saw the sovereignty of God in the life of Moses.
 While Pharaoh had declared that all Hebrew boys be killed, God placed a Hebrew boy in
Pharaoh’s palace to be raised by his daughter.
 Ask: What are some of the shortcomings Moses demonstrated? God still used him
mightily, and He can use you, as well.
BIBLE STUDY:
1. Pharaoh & Plagues (Exodus 7:8-25)
a. Observe God’s Word:
i. This passage is a historical narrative that we believe occurred around
1491 BC.
ii. What sign did Aaron do before Pharaoh? His rod turned into a serpent.
iii. Pharaoh responded by calling his wise men and sorcerers & they were
able to repeat the feat. How do you think they did that? Enchantments;
possible illusions.
iv. Notice how Pharaoh responded: His heart was hardened and he rejected
God’s command.
v. The next day Moses and Aaron met Pharaoh as he was going to the river
(15). This was likely a daily religious ritual; he believed the Nile was a holy
river.
vi. What sign did God perform through Aaron? All the water in Egypt turned
to blood, including the Nile.
vii. Once again the magicians were able to replicate this miracle, and
Pharaoh rejected God’s command and hardened his heart.
viii. What were the immediate consequences of this plague? No water to
drink, imagine the water quality, and the fish in the river died.
ix. Knowing that the Egyptians believed the Nile was a holy river, what was
God demonstrating through this miracle? That He was more powerful
than the “river god.”
x. If the magicians had been truly as powerful as God, what might they have
done instead of apparently turning some water to blood? Turned the
blood back into water.
b. Interpret the truth:
i. As we look through the rest of the plagues, we are going to look at the
attack on the gods of Egypt represented by each plague.
ii. In this case, the god Hapi was connected to the annual flooding of the
Nile that brought life to the farmland.
iii. If Hapi was as powerful as the Egyptians believed, he could have reversed
the effects of the plague. God was demonstrating His authority.
TEN PLAGUES OF EGYPT WORKSHEET
 Use the answer key to quickly work through the plagues, providing the name of the
Egyptian gods for the students and describe the connection. Don’t take too long!
2. The Passover (Exodus 12:1-13 and 12:29-30)
a. Observe God’s Word:
i. God delivered the instructions for Passover to Moses and Aaron. What
were Moses and Aaron to do with the instructions? Pass on to the
Israelites.
ii. What was to happen on the 10th day of the month? Each head of
household was to take a male lamb without blemish and less than a year
old. They were to keep the lamb to be kept in the house for 4 days – from
10th to the 14th.
iii. What happened at twilight on the 14th day? All of the lambs were to be
killed.
iv. They were to take the blood of the lamb and place it on the doorposts
and lintel of each house. What were the specific instructions about eating
the lamb? (vs. 8-11)
v. What was the intent of eating in haste while wearing sandals, etc.? They
were to be ready to leave Egypt immediately.
vi. What was the blood a sign of? God would pass by the houses with the
blood and not kill the firstborn in the homes.
vii. At midnight God passed through Egypt and killed the firstborn in every
household that did not have blood on the doorposts, including livestock.
Can you imagine?
viii. How did Pharaoh respond to the deaths? He was part of the great cry –
look to vs. 31.
b. Interpret the truth:
i. What connection does 1 Corinthians 5:7 make between Christ and the
Passover?
ii. How does John the Baptist announce Jesus in John 1:29?
iii. Connections between the Passover lamb and the Lamb of God are very
clear. What are some you see?
1. Male without blemish – Christ was sinless (I Peter 1:19)
2. Looking to the blood – Ephesians 1:7
3. Passover meal = Lord’s Supper – Luke 22:19-20
4. Judgment of those without blood – God will judge those not saved
through Christ’s blood (Rom. 5:9)
Applying God’s Word
 How can we be encouraged by knowing that God was working to relieve the suffering of
the Israelites even as their labor got harder?
 How could we use the Passover account to witness to those with a Jewish background?
 How could you use the text to refute the ideas that the plagues were just natural
events?
 How are you assured that you are safe from God’s punishment for sin?
