I. COURSE OVERVIEW
The following information is what will appear in the MJC 2008-2009 Catalog.
NURSE 353 - Vocational Nurse 4
9 Unit(s)
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of NURSE 352.
Applies basic nursing knowledge to the care and needs of adult patients with disorders of the
reproductive system, during normal maternity nursing care and pediatric patients. Practical
experience will be gained in the acute hospital setting. Nursing leadership principles are introduced.
A-F Only. Materials fee required. Applicable to the Associate Degree.

Before entering the course, the student will be able to:
1. Discuss the phases of the nursing process
2. Identify normal growth and development of the adult
3. Describe issues related to health promotion/protection and
adaptation to common health problems associated with the
aging process
4. Identify actions, side effects, and nursing implications of
selected medications
5. Apply principles of pharmacology for adminstration of
medications
6. Describe the characteristics of normal psychology relevant to
the emotional needs of patients
7. Describe legal and ethical principles affecting professional
nursing practice
8. Perform and assess the following skills as they relate to
various aspects of patient care.

5. TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS
A. Quality: Assignments require the appropriate level of critical thinking
1. Review case studies for assigned disease process and / or care of the
perinatal patient and newborn and pediatric patient. Analyze data and
develop a plan for nursing care.
2. Access the patient's chart. Plan for individualized patient care,
implement plan of care and evaluate effects of care.
B. Quantity: Hours spent on assignments in addition to hours of instruction
(lecture hours)
1. Preparation for clinical includes clinical prep form, medication cards
and lab work analysis for each assigned patient.
2. Theory preparation includes reading assigned chapters and preparing
for weekly quizzes and tests.

A. COURSE GOAL
As a result of satisfactory completion of this course, the student should
be prepared to:
plan, implement and evaluate care of selected adult patients with a
reproductive health care diagnoses, perinatal women and newborns, and
pediatric patients with acute and chronic diseases.
