Homework 3
1. Calculate variance and standard deviation for the following sample of scores (you can
use any of the followings: Excel Toolpak, Excel functions, or SPSS/PASW):
X: 3, 2, 4, 3, 1, 5, 0, 2, 4, 6, 4, 2, 1, 0, 2, 3
2. The file contains data on the reported number of sexual partners for 1682 males and
1850 females from Chatterjee, Handcock, and Simonoff (1995).
http://ella.slis.indiana.edu/~eyan/teaching/S519/Sexual_Activity.xls
The first column is a nominal variable that codes gender (1=female, 2=male), and the
second column contains the reported number of sexual partners. Please refer to the two
variables simply as gender and score. Using the data list command, read the file into
Excel or SPSS. Next, we will compute descriptive statistics on score:
1.
What are the mean, median, and mode number of partners reported for men? What
about for women?
2. What are the range and standard deviation for men? What about for women?
3. What is the most appropriate measure of central tendency to use here, and why?
