Statistics – Project 3 – Is it normal?
In this project, you will find real data (at least 20 elements) that you think would
have a normal distribution. The data can be found on the internet, in other classes
or textbooks, or can be collected by you. You will be running three tests on your
data to determine how normal it is. The following are required of you for the
project:
1. A table containing all of the raw data, as well as a source (citation) for the
data.
2. TEST #1: A histogram showing the shape of the distribution of your data.
3. The mean and standard deviation of your data.
4. TEST #2: The percent of the data within one standard deviation, two
standard deviations, and three standard deviations. These computations
should be clearly shown in a way that is easy for your audience to
understand. [See page 93]
5. TEST # 3: A normal probability plot for your data on Excel (x coordinates are
data values, y coordinates are z scores). [See pages 94-95 and notes on Excel]
6. A 1-2 page paper explaining:
a. Relevant background information on your data
b. Why, at the outset, you felt that your data would be normal
c. The shape of the distribution
d. Why or why not your distribution is approximately normal using the
results of #4, relative to the Empirical Rule
e. How you found z-scores in #5
f. Why or why not your distribution is approximately normal using the
results of #5. Explain to an uninformed statistics student why a
normal probability plot can assess normality.
7. Your report should be a paper with corresponding graphs and tables as
described above.
8. Be prepared to briefly share your results with the class.
9. The project is due in hard copy in class on Friday November 30th.
a. Late projects are not accepted. Absence is not an excuse. Plan ahead!
