Sumer was located in Mesopotamia. The two rivers in Sumer were the Tigris and
Euphrates. To control the rivers the Sumerians dug canals and built dikes. There
were twelve city-states in Sumer. The government in each city state was a
monarchy. In the center of each city state was a large ziggurat, or religious temple,
made of mud bricks. Agriculture was the main way people make a living. When
they produced more food than they needed to stay alive, they had a surplus. A
division of labor came about when not all people had to work at producing food and
some could do other jobs.
