Student Research Project
Department of Physiology and Sleep laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ,
Topic: Measurement of autonomous nervous system (ANS) disbalance during sleep
in patients with sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) and its correction with inhalation of
ionized oxygen.
Supervisers: Doc. V. Donic, MD, PhD and prof. Z. Tomori, MD, DrSc
Aims: Correlation of ANS disbalance with the severity of SRBD and correction of vegetative
dystonia with inhalation of ionized oxygen.
Annotation: Sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) are often associated with severe
changes in autonomous nervous system (vagotonia with bradycardia of 25- 35 bpm in deep
sleep and even asystolia requiring pacemaker implantation, dysrhythmias, paroxysmal
ventricular tachycardias and hypertension with frequent arousals in REM sleep), frequent
paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in second part of the night for incipient pulmonary congestion
due to atrial dilation and diastolic dysfunction in severe OSAS. Also Sudden Cardiac Death
may occasionally result from acute cardio-respiratory failure due to asystolia or ventricular
fibrillation in patients with very severe OSAS and congestive heart failure. Measurement of
ANS disbalance during sleep and its correction by inhalation of ionized oxygen produced by a
device ThO2 developed by Dr. Engler from Salzburg, will be investigated. The project is
complementary to an international project COST Action B26- Cardiovascular aspects of
OSAS with participation of our cardio-respiratory group and the Sleep laboratory established
in a framework of European Tempus project.
Methods: Measurements of vago-sympathetic balance during various stages of sleep and
wakefulness in patients with SRBD investigated in the sleep laboratory.
Participants: 1- 4 students of medicine from 3rd or higher years of study interested in sleep
medicine, in clinico-physiological investigations and use of computer-assisted studies.
