As proud stewards of three historic venues that speak to the enduring impact of creativity in our city, STG is committed to ensuring this lasting vitality of the arts. The ability to connect us to, and find relevance in, another time is one of the many ways that art helps us to make sense of our world — expanding our horizons, deepening our knowledge, and strengthening our bonds with one another. This gives us the chance to experience life from vantage points and eras other than our own, and in doing so, encourages us to see commonalities and develop compassion for one another. Finding roots in Puccini’s 1896 opera La Boheme, RENT stands as a prescient story that speaks to the timelessness of art. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of New York City at the height of the AIDS epidemic, it follows the entwined lives of seven struggling artists who go to great lengths to follow their dreams without selling out. At its core, RENT celebrates friendship and creativity while shining a light on the biting reality of addiction, homelessness, and access to healthcare — issues which continue to plague so many, both locally and nationally. Twenty years after its debut, RENT speaks as earnestly and poignantly to audiences as ever before. Just one year before RENT first opened on Broadway, The Paramount reopened to become, in the words of STG founder Ida Cole, “the people’s theatre…where everyone [is] welcome and [feels] comfortable.” Steeped in this rich culture, we look towards the future with the intention of continuing to champion inclusion of patrons and artists from all walks of life. We hope that tonight’s performance resonates as strongly as it first did 20 years ago, serving as a reminder of the importance of finding joy amidst grief, holding hope in the face of uncertainty, and embracing love above all else. After all, there’s no day but today! Renowned choreographer Alvin Ailey conceived the camp in 1989 and incorporated a vital element of his vision that asserts “dance is for everybody.” Using the power of dance, AileyCamp enriches and positively impacts the lives of children. Seattle Theatre Group hosts 1 of only 10 AileyCamps in America, and for a 2nd year, 60 young people ages 11–14, will be enriched as they experience what Mr. Ailey made possible decades before their birth. Seattle Theatre Group is committed to creating access to AileyCamp for young people in our region. As an all-free experience, everything needed for young people to focus on personal development for 6 weeks, is available to them at no cost. Healthful meals, dance attire, curriculum materials, and transportation are all provided. While many community partners have stepped up in support of AileyCamp, a significant area of remaining need for the camp is transportation. 18 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP CHRISTOPHER NELSON For six weeks during the summer 60 young people will dedicate themselves to a daily rigor known as AileyCamp. After completing a full school year, these young people spend an additional 30 days, Monday – Friday, in an allday summer experience learning various personal development, communication, and confidence building skills, while also learning various dance techniques. The successful goal of this six-week, completely free program is to create an opportunity for young people to learn new skills and develop respect for themselves and others. Currently, in order to safely transport all AileyCampers, from their pick-up locations in Seattle and South King County, to camp and back home, costs $62,500 for the six-week period. For $1,000, you can help us guarantee safe transport for one child for the entire camp. Your support would make a tremendous difference! Deep thanks to everyone at STG who made Ailey Camp possible. If only every child in this country could have such an opportunity. STG AileyCamp supporter Seattle Theatre Group joins Alvin Ailey in making a commitment to children by establishing this unique program in our own community. Please join us by saying yes. “I will not use the word can’t to define my possibilities.” (AileyCamp Affirmation) To donate, learn more, please go to stgpresents.org/education/ aileycamp, or call Maura Ahearne at 206-467-5510 x 1148. And, if you know of a company that may like to sponsor or underwrite the transportation, please contact us! 6 2 3 7 4 8 5 6 8 3 9 5 6 7 10 8 9 11 11 12 12 10 11 STARBUC KS 2 2 N D A N N UA L 4 10 2 9 7 1 12 HE L I V E AT T UNT PA R A M O H EA R G RE AT N E S S IN TH E M AK IN G zz through Witness the future of ja ol bands. five incredible high scho Friday MARCH 17 7 PM $22 100% of the ticket sales go toward supporting our young musicians Tickets available at stgpresents.org Bellevue | Edmonds-Woodway | Garfield Mountlake Terrace | Roosevelt encoreartsseattle.com 19 © 2016 Starbucks Coffee Company.
