Main Street Lesson Plan 2014-2015
Teacher: B. Davis
Period(s): 2nd,3rd,4th
Start date: 9/2/2014
End date: 9/5/2014
State competency goal and objective: Biology-Goal 4: The learner will understand how biological
molecules are essential to the survival of living organisms. Bio.4.1: Compare the structures and functions
of the major biological molecules (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids) as related to the
survival of living organisms. Earth Science-Goal 1: Explain the Earth’s role as a body in space. EEn.1.1.1
Explain the Earth’s motion through space, including precession, nutation, the barycenter, and its path
about the galaxy. Physical Science-Goal 1: Understand motion in terms of speed, velocity, acceleration,
and momentum. PSc.1.1.1 Explain motion in terms of frame of reference, distance, and displacement.
EQ: Biology-What are the four major organic molecules and how is their structure and function related?
Earth/Environ.-How is precession, nutation, and the barycenter related to the Earth’s movement through
space? Physical Science-How can frame of reference, distance, and displacement be used to describe
motion?
1Literacy enhancements/Key Vocabulary: organic molecules, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic
acids, DNA, amino acids, enzymes, precession, nutation, barycenter, solar system, galaxy, universe, solar
energy, radiation, gravity, tides, frame of reference, distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration,
vector, scalar quantities
Adaptations/Differentiation: extended time, modified assignment, group work, read out loudassignments, hands-on activities and labs.
Lesson steps:
1.Start the lesson
Review and focus- Students will review previous material by completing warm-ups and answering
questions orally. Students will focus on new material and be introduced to the essential question.
2. Presentation
Teacher input- The teacher will explain and demonstrate new concepts. Teacher will engage the curiosity
of the students and students will participate in discussion of the new concepts. The essential question will
be incorporated throughout the presentation.
3. Guided practice
Students will complete in class assignments and hands-on activities with minimal input from the teacher.
The teacher will check for student understanding by checking student work and asking the student critical
thinking questions. The teacher will guide the student through the inquiry base assignments and questions.
4. Independent practice
Students will be give assignments, hands- on activities, complete projects, and labs, formative and
summative assessments.
5. Evaluation/Summarizing strategies: The teacher will check student work for accuracy and completion.
The teacher will discuss the work completed with the students and make comments and suggestions to the
students.
6. Closure: have students answer essential question.
7. Students will complete any assignments/assessments not finished for homework.
