Planet Review
Inner Rocky Planets
Mercury
-Closest to the Sun (.38 AU)
-No Atmosphere
-Extreme Temperatures
-Mariner 10
-No Moon
Venus
-Earth’s Twin –similar in density and internal structure
-A Day is longer than a Year
-Rotates in the opposite direction (Retrograde)
-Atmosphere is very thick and has a lot of pressure
-Carbon Dioxide atmosphere with Sulfuric Acid Clouds
-Heat is trapped on Venus because of the greenhouse effect
-No Moon
-Magellan and Venera 7
Earth
-3rd Planet from Sun
-Only planet with liquid water
-Oxygen rich atmosphere that can sustain life
-One Moon - Luna
Mars
-Red Planet due to iron in the soil
-Atmosphere of Carbon Dioxide
-Polar Ice caps but no liquid water
-Immense wind/dust storms
-Rovers landed and sent images back from Mars
-Has volcano but they are inactive (Biggest in the solar systemOlympus Mons)
-Two Moons – Phobos and Deimos (captured asteroids?)
Outer Planet Review
Gas Giants- Large planets with small cores that are covered in gas
clouds
-Massive = Large gravitation which keeps in gas
-Cold = So far from the sun but heats up toward center
-Some have rings-a thin disk of small particles of
ice and rock
Jupiter
-Largest planet
-Atmosphere
-Thick
-Mostly H and He
-Great Red Spot – Giant storm in upper atmosphere
-Structure
-Small Dense Core???
-made of iron and rock
-Thick liquid mantle
-Moons: 63+
-Four Galilean Moons (Io,Europa,Ganymede,Callisto)
Saturn
-2nd largest
-Atmosphere
-Thick
-Mostly H and He
-Average density is less than water = float
-Rings
-Ice and Rocks
-Broad and thin
-Moons: 53+
-Biggest is Titan (Huygens Probe landed)
-Has atmosphere
Uranus
-Cold
-Blue/Green color due to methane in atmosphere
-Has rings
-Rotates in 17 hours
-Tipped on side (pole faces Sun)
-Moons : 27+
Neptune
-Cold
-Blue due to Methane
-Visible Clouds
-Shrinking and Heating up
-Great Dark Spot – storm that comes and goes
-Moons: 13+
-Triton is biggest
