The German language programs introduce students to the heritage of German speaking societies, and so increase
their awareness and appreciation of other cultures. Through the study of the language, students gain a greater
understanding of the perspectives of the different peoples who comprise Canada’s diverse society, and develop a
deeper appreciation of and respect for the identity, rights, and values of others.
Naturally, this leads to the exploration of topics related to the language under study and the culture of which it forms
part. Such topics include art, history, geography, and social customs. They will explore aspects of the culture of
countries where the German language is spoken, including social customs and the arts, by participating in cultural
events and activities involving both print and technological resources.

The study of economics, geography, history, law, and politics naturally involves a wide range of learning strategies
and teaching approaches, as students are required to research, think critically, work cooperatively, discuss relevant
issues, and make decisions about significant human concerns.
An understanding of history not only contributes to the development of personal identity, but is also an important
part of the education of an informed and responsible citizen. An essential aspect of history is the appreciation of the
legacy of the past, through which students come to understand their connection to their heritage and their role as
citizens. Students will analyse diverse societies from around the world, with particular regard to the political,
cultural, and economic structures and historical forces that form the foundation of the modern world.
