Introduction to Ancient China
Essential Questions: How does the geography influence the development
of ancient civilizations? How do ancient cultures influence our world
today?
Day 1: Creating a Map of Ancient China
Connection: In our previous studies of ancient cultures, we have learned
that geographical features are very important. Today we will create a
map of ancient China highlighting the important geographical features.
Teaching Point: Recognizing the important geographical features of a
region help us to learn what drew people to a certain area and what
kept enemies out of the country.
Active Engagement: [Pass out blank maps for the China Map Project.
Have students highlight the boundary of China, the Yellow and Yangtze
Rivers, the Great Wall, the Himalayan Mountains, Beijing and Shanghei.
Explain that the rivers were where people settled initially and that the
Himalayan Mountains acted as a natural barrier to their enemies.]
If the Himalayan Mountains acted as a natural barrier, why do you think
the Great Wall was built? [Explain that it was built to keep out their
Mongolian enemies.]
Link: Today we learned that the early people of ancient China settled
along the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers. We also learned that the Himalayan
Mountains and the Great Wall acted as a barrier to keep their enemies
away. Tomorrow we will learn more about the Great Wall of China.
