What’s energy?
Energy is the ability of an object to move, heat up or produce light.
What’s mechanical energy?
kinetic energy
potential energy
Energy that produces movement is called mechanical energy. There
are two types of mechanical energy: kinetic energy and potential
energy.
How do the other five forms of energy differ?
Chemical
energy is
stored in
some
substances.
Electrical
energy is in
the form of
electricity.
Thermal
energy is in
the form of
heat.
Light energy
is in the form
of light.
Nuclear
energy is
stored in the
atomic
structure of
all matter.
What are some common energy transformations?
Aeroplanes and cars
transform the chemical
energy in fuel and petrol
into kinetic and thermal
energy.
Fans and electric drills
transform electrical
energy into kinetic and
thermal energy.
Solar panels transform
light energy from the Sun
into electrical energy
during the day.
How do we measure calories in food?
The chemical energy stored in food and drink is measured in calories. The more
calories in a food, the more energy it contains.
What are the different types of renewable energies?
Renewable sources include: hydroelectric power, wind energy, solar energy and
biofuels.
What are the different types of non-renewable
energies?
Non-renewable energy is energy from sources that are limited. They are:
petroleum, coal, uranium and natural gas.
How can we protect our planet?
Reduce: buy products
that don’t have a lot of
packaging.
Reuse: use glass,
metal and plastic
containers again and
again.
Recycle: separate
rubbish and put it in
the correct bin.
