We send the messenger only to give good
news and to warn …. Surah 6:48
(Qur’an)
L.O. To know
L.O. Know and understand Muslim beliefs about Risalah and consider their importance
Risalah is the teaching about Prophethood, which is the channel of communication
between God and human beings.
What is a prophet?
Prophets are human beings who are chosen by Allah (God) to carry out a special role as his
messengers. Muslims believe that Allah has sent many prophets throughout history. Muslim
tradition says there were 124,000. The Qur’an mentions 25. The five main prophets are
known as the ‘resolute’ ones. They are Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham) Musa (Moses), Isa
(Jesus) and Muhammad, who Muslims believe to be the last and final prophet. They each
received a book from God, for example, Moses the Torah, Jesus the Holy Gospel, and
Muhammad the Qur’an
How did the prophets get their message?
Muslims believe that the message they received was a special revelation. This means that however
wise the prophets may have been their message does not come from their own wisdom, but from
Allah. It gives knowledge that wisdom, intelligence or common sense could never reveal. The
messages were given directly by Allah or the angel, Jibril. Muslims believe these messages are the
most accurate because they come directly from God.
What was the message?
Islam teaches that all these prophets brought the same basic truth, and their main task was to call
people to Tawhid. i.e their main message is that there is only one God, and that he will punish the
wicked and reward the good. So they tell people about the Day of Judgement and the unseen
world that they should fight evil to get their reward.
Muslims believe that some people changed or ignored this message, so Muhammad’s special
mission was to perfect and complete this guidance.
Angels
The word of Allah is brought to the Messengers
by angels. Angels are supernatural beings,
created by God out of light. They have no
freewill and so are sinless, and are able to
receive God’s words directly from him and pass
these on to the prophets.
Angels also take information from humans and
present it to God. These are the recording
angels who write down everything each person
thinks, says, or does. This record is kept in a
book and is presented as evidence, in front of
God, at the final judgement.
