The Beginning-Tornadoes develop from thunderstorms. The stronger the
thunderstorm, the more likely it will produce a tornado. Wild winds develop deep
within the cumulonimbus clouds where warm, moist air meets cool dry air moving in
the opposite direction, and is forced to rise.
2. Spinning out-The updrafts in a big cumulonimbus cloud cause the warm air to
continue to spin. The water droplets in these clouds are pushed around and around
by the rapidly twisting winds. This creates a funnel cloud.
3. On the Move!-The funnel cloud of spinning air (a vortex) drops down out of the
thunderstorm. It drops through the cloud base towards the ground creating a
spiraling column of air-a tornado! A tornado is a low pressure area and acts like a
vacuum sucking up whatever is it its path! Tornadoes are also associated with
severe lightning and hail.

Tornado Ally-Most tornadoes occur on the plains of central North America during
spring and summer. This is a time when warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico
meets cold, dry air from the Rockies, creating ideal conditions for the formation
of Tornadoes.
