Chapter 13
1. Be able to name (using IUPAC nomenclature rules or common names if given in
class) an alcohol and an ether given a structural formula.
2. Be able to draw an alcohol and an ether given the name of a compound (given
using IUPAC nomenclature rules or common names if given in class).
3. Be able to list six physical properties of alcohols.
4. Be able to list six physical properties of ethers.
5. Be able to write a balanced chemical equation for the combustion reaction of a
given alcohol.
6. Be able to write a balanced chemical equation for the combustion reaction of a
given ether.
7. Be able to define: absolute alcohol, denatured alcohol, grain alcohol, wood
alcohol, and rubbing alcohol.
8. Be able to predict the organic product of an intramolecular dehydration of an
alcohol.
9. Be able to predict the organic product of an intermolecular dehydration of an
alcohol.
10. Be able to predict the organic product of an oxidation reaction of a primary
alcohol, a secondary alcohol, and a tertiary alcohol.
11. Be able to classify a given structure as a primary alcohol, secondary alcohol,
tertiary alcohol, ether, alkane, alkene, and alkyne.
