2)Answer the following
1 Why is fluted paper usually used when doing hot filtration during
recrystallization?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
2) What is the purpose of recrystallizing a solid?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
3)How are soluble and insoluble impurities removed during
recrystallization?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
4) Why is it recommended to use no more than the minimum amount of
solvent than is necessary to dissolve the solid being recrystallized?.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
5) Why should the hot fltrate be allowed to cool slowly as the desired
product recrystallizes?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
6) If your experiment yield of acetanilide is greater than 100%, how
could this occur?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
7)What is the effect on the boiling point of a solution (e.g. water)
produced by a soluble non-volatile substance (e.g. sodium chloride)?
What is the effect an insoluble substance such as sand or charcoal?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
8) Why is the conjugate base of benzoic acid more soluble in water than
ether?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

3)solve the problems
1)If 5.0 g of compound X is dissolved in 100 mL of water and extracted
with 100 mL of ether, calculate the amount of compound X that will be left
in the water layer after the extraction. (Note: The Distribution coefficient
for Compound X between ether and water is 2.5)
2)a-Calculate the vapor pressure of a solution containing 20mol % n-hexane
and 80mol% n-octan at 90C assuming that Raults law is obeyed the vapor
pressure for pure component, at 90C are the following n-hexane =1390 torr
and n-octan =253 torr
b) calculate the composition n-hexan and n-octan solution that boils at 90C.
