Lesson One
Introduction to standard
&
Anatomy Basics
Lesson objectives:At the end of this you will have gained a
better understanding of
The achievement standard.
Anatomical planes and anatomical terms.
Why you are here?
How?
Assessment?
Learn about body structure and
function and how it relates to
performance in physical activity
One term of mainly class based
lessons with some practical to
underpin the theory.
Internal
2 assessments. 1 with the
option of verbal submission
Credits?

Assessment criteria.
Achievement Achievement Achievement

Excellence
Demonstrate
understanding of the
function of the body
as it relates to the
performance of
physical activity.
Demonstrate indepth understanding
of the function of the
body as it relates to
the performance of
physical activity.
Demonstrate
comprehensive
understanding of the
function of the body
as it relates to the
performance of
physical activity.
Demonstrate knowledge of body structure and
function related to performance of physical
activity.
Means……….
Body structure and function involves how
the human body works in relation to
physical activity.
This will include:•basic functional anatomy
•basic principles of biomechanics
•basic physiological responses to
large muscle locomotor-type
activities.
Lesson One – Anatomical Position
A person in the anatomical position is….
•
•
•
•
•
standing erect
head, eyes and toes pointing forward,
feet together
arms by the side
palms of the hands also facing forwards.
Anatomical Planes
.
Frontal
Separates the body
into anterior and
posterior (front &
Back). Can also be
called the coronal
plane.
Horizontal
Separates the body into Superior and Inferior parts
(closer to the head & closer to the feet).
The horizontal plane,
or transverse plane,
is a plane which splits
the body or body part
in question into upper
and lower parts.
Median
Separates the body into two mirror images
The sagittal plane is a vertical plane
which runs parallel to the median
plane, but does not necessarily pass
through the body's midline. In effect,
the median plane is a specific type of
sagittal plane.
A sagittal plane is any plane parallel
to the median and hence the median
plane is also called the midsagittal
plane.
Anatomical Terms
3. Medial - toward the middle
4. Lateral - toward/from the side
5. Proximal - toward the attachment of a
limb
6. Distal - toward the finger/toes
7. Superior - above
8. Inferior - below
9. Anterior - toward/from the front
10. Posterior - toward/from the back
11. Peripheral - toward the surface
12. Palmer - toward/on the palm of the
hand
13. Plantar - toward/on the sole of the foot
