1. Where does the almost all energy on Earth come from? The Sun.
2. What are the levels of organization in the biosphere from smallest to largest?
Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biome, and Biosphere
3. What organisms do NOT need sunlight to live? Chemosynthetic Bacteria
4. Why is matter (like carbon, nitrogen, water and phosphorus) able to recycle through the biosphere?
Because matter is not used up, it is only transformed
5. Why can’t energy be recycled through the biosphere? Because energy is used as it moves through
the biosphere. (10% Rule)
6. What carries out the process of nitrogen fixation? Bacteria in the roots of legume plants.
7. How is carbon stored in the biosphere? Stored in the form of fossil fuels, underground.
8. How does nitrogen in the soil return back to the atmosphere? A process called denitrification,
carried out by a bacteria in the soil it converts nitrates into atmospheric nitrogen.
9. Compare and contrast photosynthesis and chemosynthesis.
Both of these are processes used to produce food, carried out by autotrophs. However,
Chemosynthesis uses chemical energy to make food while photosynthesis uses light energy from
the sun to produce food.
10. What process removes carbon from the atmosphere? Photosynthesis
ESSAY
11. Name and describe the 2 roles of bacteria in the nitrogen cycle.
Use your biogeochemical notes outline to answer this, or your textbook.
GOOD LUCK! 
