Angle – a figure formed by two rays that have the same endpoint
Acute Angle – an angle that is open less than a right angle
Obtuse Angle – an angle that is open more than a right angle
Right Angle – an angle that forms a square corner
Approximate or Approximately – Estimate or about
Area Model – a model for multiplication in which the length and width represent
the product.
Benchmark Fractions – fractions that are commonly used for estimation
Decimal – point used to separate ones from tenths and hundredths.
Common Denominator – a denominator that is the same in two or more fractions
Division – mathematical operation that tells how many equal groups there are or
how many are in each group
Comparisons or compare – to examine two or more shapes, equations or values,
in order to note similarities or differences
Composite number - a whole number greater than one that has more than 2
factors
Convert or conversion – an exchange from one unit of measure to another
Customary Unit – unit of measurement used in the United States
Decompose – The process of separating numbers into their components (to divide a
number into smaller parts). To take numbers apart in a problem to make it easier to
understand and solve.
Remainder – the number that remains after division is complete
Place Value – the value given to the place a digit has in a number
Degree – the unit of measure for angles
Distance – a numerical description of how far apart objects are
Dividend – the number being divided
End Point – the point at which a line segment or ray terminates
Equal To – to be equivalent to; have the same value
Mixed Number – a number with a whole number part and a fraction part
Improper Fractions – a fraction in which the numerator is equal to or greater
than the denominator
Equilateral Triangle – a triangle in which all the sides are equal
Fraction – a symbol that is used to describe one or more parts of a whole that is
divided into equal parts
Greater than - “Bigger Than” or > It refers to where a number is located on the
number line. If you have two numbers that are NOT equal and you see where they
are on the number line, then the BIGGER of the two numbers, the one to the
RIGHT, is ______ the other.
Hundreds – a cardinal number, 10 times 10, refers to the 3rd position to the left of
the decimal
Perpendicular Lines – two lines that intersect to form square corners or right
angles
Parallel Lines – two lines that never intersect
Isosceles triangle – a triangle that has two sides of equal length
Less than - “Smaller Than” or < It refers to where a number is located on the
number line. If you have two numbers that are NOT equal and you see where they
are on the number line, then the SMALLER of the two numbers, the one to the
LEFT, is _____ the other.
Multiple – product of any two whole numbers
Vertex/Vertices - The common endpoint of the two rays in an angle; the point at
which three or more edges meet in a solid figure; the point of a cone.
Divisor – the number by which a number is divided
Quotient – the answer to a division problem
Line – a straight path of points that goes on forever in two directions
Line Segment – a part of a line that has two endpoints
Line of Symmetry - A figure has ____ when it can be folded along one or more lines that
create congruent parts, which can fit on top of each other exactly.
Million – a cardinal number, 1000 times 1000, the position of the 7th digit to the left of the
decimal
Money Change - The amount of money you get back when you purchase something and it
costs less than the amount of money you gave the clerk.
Prime Number – any number greater than 1 that has exactly two factors, itself and 1
Protractor – a device used to measure and draw angles
Ray – part of a line that has one endpoint and extends forever in one direction
Right Triangle – a triangle in which one angle is a right angle
Round - A process that determines which multiple of 10, 100, 1000, etc., a number is
closest to. Replacing a number with a number that tells ABOUT how many or how much.
Scalene Triangle – a triangle in which no sides have the same length
Tenths - One out of ten equal parts of a whole. The position of the 1st digit to the right of
the decimal point.
Unit Fraction - A rational number written as a fraction where the numerator is one and
the denominator is a positive integer.
