Advanced Biology Lecture
 There
are three main forms of Evolution
1.) Divergent
(most common)
2.) Convergent
3.) Parallel
This is the most common form
of evolution and is the
example that we most often
use to describe it.
Def: One common species separates into
two new species.
Environmental Pressures:
Warm weather vs. cold
weather adaptations
Common Parent
(Ancestor)
Giant Armadillo
America
Giant Anteater
South America
Giant Pangolin
Africa
Spiny Anteater
Australia
Def: Related species evolve similar traits
due to the niche they occupy.
This form of evolution is the
easiest to describe because
you are talking about two
separate species.
Def: Two separate species evolve together
based on their environment.
This happens to more and
more species of animals
everyday.
Can be human caused or
naturally occurring
Def: Where a species cannot adjust to their
environment naturally and the entire
species is wiped out.
 Organisms
to…
evolve because they have
 If
you didn’t change when your
environment did you would be in
jeopardy of dying…
Not good for your survival…
 The
method through which you evolve is
determined by nature (Natural Selection)
Do you think we will ever see the
saber toothed squirrel again???
 Well
think about this example:
You have a fish that lives in a very cold
climate where the water freezes
solid… How do you cope with this?
