LAS CRUCES SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND SAXOPHONIST JAMES HOULIK
TO PERFORM IN SILVER CITY
The Mimbres Region Arts Council is pleased to bring the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra to the WNMU Fine Arts
Center Theatre in Silver City for a highly-requested return engagement. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. on October
26, 2012. This program is sponsored in part by Edward Jones Investment/James Edd Hughs of Silver City with the Grant
County Community Concert Association as a cooperating sponsor.
The program includes Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville, Russell Peck's The Upward Stream and
Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
Guest tenor saxophone performer James Houlik is recognized as the leading performer on tenor saxophone in the world.
Houlik has taken the tenor saxophone to unimagined heights. Audiences and critics alike have celebrated his remarkable
artistic achievements.
Houlik is the founding professor of Saxophone study at the North Carolina School of the Arts, and is currently Professor
of Saxophone and Chair of Woodwinds at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He has appeared in such major venues as
Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Town Hall in Toronto, The Smithsonian Institution, and London's Barbican.
Symphony conductor, Lonnie Klein, a recent recipient of the Centennial 2012 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the
Arts, is committed to performing music of our time. Since his appointment, the LCSO has given world premieres of new
music especially commissioned for the orchestra.
From his inaugural concert with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra at New Mexico State University in October 1999,
Music Director Lonnie Klein has led the orchestra to new levels of artistic excellence, with high audience acclaim, rave
reviews and ten consecutive sold-out seasons. Joseph Schwantner, noted American composer, said, “Lonnie’s industry
and energy knows no bounds and he has propelled the orchestra into an ensemble that possesses great musical integrity
and an ability to engage new and challenging music in a manner that is truly exceptional.”
The Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra will feature talented musicians, many of whom have played with orchestras around
the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the popular New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the El Paso
Symphony Orchestra.
Additional sponsors for this very special event include Western New Mexico University, the Holiday Inn Express Silver
City and Silver City Radio. For tickets to the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra contact the MRAC offices at 1201 Pope
