like?

Farmers
• Owners of big farming estates built themselves a
central group of buildings known as villa.
Animals used by farmers—
-sheeps, cows, pigs, goats, chickens, and geese
Mostly farmers farmed fruits, vegetables, meats from
animals and eggs.

Roman food
 Fruits and vegetables
 Wheat, rice, wine and nuts
 People often living in apartments cooked their food in a brazier,
but various emperors said that was illegal. There was a take-away
bar where they could go eat.
 If you were a rich roman then you’ll have a slave cooking and you
could eat a great variety of foods.
Most of the romans used herbs and spices, mostly they loved sauces,
especially liquamen which was made from salted fish .
Most of the pots or pans were made of clay.

Clothes they wear

• The classic toga was distinct Roman garment
that only actual citizens were allow to wear.
People within the comfort of their owns
homes .The tunic worn by patrician men was
made from similar to toga.

• Married women were required to wear the
loose,toga equivalent stola.This long sleeveless
tunic was strapped at the shoulder,gatheres in and
girdled at the waist with the garment extending to
the feet.In addition,the pulla was sort of shawl to
throw over the whol figure. Women wear make-up.
Something extra
• Foot-gear was mainly of two kinds ,but was
worn in many style and customs The rules for
shoes weren’t as strict as those for regular
clothing.The calceus was sandal like shoe
strapped to the foot for internal wear.
MILLS
• The Romans invented a lot of new ways to mine
for metals like silver and gold and lead. They
developed water mills as well for grinding grain.
Vaults
• The use of concrete helped them to develop the
dome and the barrel vaults and the cross vault.
They used their vaults to build aqueducts to carry
fresh water to towns, and they used their
engineering skills to build sewage system to keep
their towns clean and healthy.
What I find interesting
• I find interesting how they discovered all of these
things with out as much schooling as we get
today. I also find it interesting how they did all
these things and made these supplies out of
almost nothing and not being taught to do them.
Sculptures
• Roman art included many varieties sculptures.
• Most were nude
• Romans favored bronze and marble
• Romans also worked stone, precious metals,
glass, and terracotta.
• They created portrait sculptures which were only
faces or heads
• Some sculptures were water fountains

• They are classified in four periods
• First (200-80BCE) delivered middle eastern styles
• Second (80BCE-100CE) landscapes
• Third (100-200CE) more ornamental
• Fourth (200-400CE) Mixture if second and third

• Plastic surgery; fixing a sagging earlobe from all
the years of heavy earrings
• eye; they had advanced surgery to make the eye
cataracts smaller
• They even had brain surgery to remove pressure
off the brain to cause less headaches
• They had scalpels, scissors, and bone forceps

• Roman law has affected law development in most Western
Civilizations and some in the East.
• The legal foundation founded by Romans influenced the
laws of other people long after the empire
• During the Roman Republic, civil law was developed
• Applied to Roman citizens
• Law of Nations was developed in the third century BCE
• Romans divided their law into written and unwritten law
• 5 types of written law: Twelve Tables, Praetor, resolutions
of the Roman Senate, expressions of the Legislative Power,
and answers to legal questions.

What is Roman
literature like? - Ovid
• Roman poet
• His greatest work is a narrative poem called Metamorphoses.
• The Metamorphoses of Ovid is one of the Western literature’s
classic works.
• A long poem in 15 books, it is a collection of mythological
stories ranging from the creation of the world to the age of
Augustus, the first emperor.
• His early works were Loves, The Art of Love, and Cure for
Love, they scandalized many Romans and probably upset
Augustus, who was trying to improve the morals of Roman
society.

AND HISTORY OF ROME
• Roman historian
• His history of Rome from the foundation of the city in 753 BC
was praised for its literary excellence and morality.
• He deplored “the dark dawning of our modern day when we
can neither endure our vices nor face the remedies needed to
cure them”.
• In 142 book Livy told the story of Rome from its earliest years
until 9 A.D

• Ivy wrote 142 books about Rome’s history.
