1. For Thursday, October 20:
Re-read about Greek and Hellenistic Culture (pp. 144-149 and pp. 153-155.)
Identify vocabulary terms on handout (don’t worry about those with an *).
CLASS: Possible open-note quiz; finish discussion of the evolution of
government in Ancient Greece and the legacy of Greek democracy
quick overview of Greek philosophy: "Greek Philosophy From A
(Aristotle) to Z (Zeno)"; thoughts on “Why Are We Here?”
2. For Friday, October 21:
Read in the text, pp. 142-144. Write a good-sized paragraph that responds to
the philosophical question: Why are we here? Approach the question in
any way you like (be creative), but be sure you follow proper paragraph
format.
CLASS: Fishbowl discussion of the homework question: Why are we here?
(making links to the various types of Greek philosophy);
suggestions on hate speech; Crash course video on Greece; musical
interlude.
3. For Monday, October 24:
Read pp. 162-170 in textbook. In your own words, answer the following:
a. How did the Romans gain control of the lands of the Mediterranean?
(approach this question from at least two angles)
b. What elements of the Roman Republic seem similar to that of the US
today? (Explain at least three fully).
CLASS: Notesheet on the legacy of Greek achievements; introduction to
Ancient Rome – question brainstorm; discussion of Roman myths of
origin, homework questions; explanation of assignment.
4. For Wednesday, October 26:
Read pp. 171-176 in textbook. Take notes in outline form that describe the
political, economic, social, and military reasons for the fall of the Roman
Republic and the reasons why the early Roman Empire was so successful.
CLASS: Discussion of the Fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the
Roman Empire; document analysis.
5. For Thursday, October 27:
Read and identify vocabulary words from pp. 177-182 in the textbook.
Come to class prepared to discuss how Roman cultural achievements still
affect the world today.
CLASS: "Life in Ancient Rome -- how does it compare to the US today?"; film
excerpt from Gladiator; open-note quiz; review sheet for upcoming
test on Greece and Rome (November 7).
6. For Friday, October 28:
Read and identify vocabulary words from pp. 183-187 in textbook; make a
list explaining in your own words six reasons why people found
Christianity appealing (and why they converted) during the Roman Empire
(to be turned in).
CLASS: "The Rise and Spread of Christianity;" chalktalk, discussion, Wordle.
7. For Monday, October 31:
Work on outline due on Wednesday. The assignment is to read pp. 188-191
in textbook and to make an outline of political, military, economic and
social reasons for the decline and fall of Rome (to be turned in).

economic and social reasons for the decline and fall of Rome (to be turned
in).

Life of Brian on Roman achievements; wrap-up of the Greece and
Rome unit.
