Name:
A type of white blood cells
that “chew” up invading
organisms.
Phagocytes
Are parts of the blood and
have three main functions.
White Blood Cells
A set of proteins made in the
liver that work with
antibodies.
Complement System
Makes new blood cells both
red and white.
Is a lymph node that
produces lymphocytes, and is
behind your scapula.
Thymus
A type of white blood cells
that allow the body to
recognize and remember
previous invaders and help
destroy them.
Lymphocytes
Is a clearish/white liquid that
surrounds cells with water,
nutrients and oxygen. It
collects wastes and gets
proteins from cells.
Lymph
Is an organ that filters the
blood for foreign cells and
worn out red blood cells.
Are glands that filter and trap
bacteria and viruses. They
are “bean-shaped.”’
Lymph Nodes
Are produced by the white
bold cells and are “Yshaped” proteins that attach
to specific germs (bacteria,
virus, and/or toxins). They
signal other cells to destroy
them.
Antibodies
The reaction of the body to a
germ that has gotten passed
the physical barriers and into
the body.
These white blood cells
produce antibodies. They
mature in bone marrow.
B-cells
Tonsils
These white blood cells
destroy virus-infected cells.
They mature in the thymus.
T-cells
Immune Response
A series of vessels that drain
and filter lymph to find and
remove bacteria.
Bone marrow
Spleen
Are cells that engulf
(surround) cells that have
been infected by viruses.
They transfer a piece of the
virus to its surface to signal
other cells.
Macrophages
Is when your body
remembers how to fight a
disease you have had before.
Immunity
Is a lymph node at the back
of your throat.
Lymph System
Lymph moves through the
body in hollow tubes of
tissue.
Lymph vessels
Are chemicals produced by
the body to control different
functions and/or
lymphocytes production.
Hormones
Is the organ that is the body’s
primary defense against
pathogens invading the body.
