LKS FACULTY OF MEDICINE SCHOOL OF NURSING Bachelor of Nursing‐RN (Part‐Time), 2012‐2013 Semester III
NURS1516 – INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS
Assignment 1 Due on 21 May 2013  You may handwrite or type your assignment. Either way is perfect!  However, sharing assignments is not acceptable. Students who are diagnosed to have shared their work will have their marks shared. For example, if 5 students share the work on a question with 10 marks, the maximum that each of these students can get will be 10/5 = 2 marks.  If the assignment is late, 5% of the total score obtained for the assignment will be deducted every working day (excluding Sundays and public holidays). The penalty runs for a maximum of 5 working days. Part I: Problems 1. The following table describes the characteristics of the participants of a study on institutionalization of older people in Hong Kong. Extracted from Chau et al. (2012)

a) Identify one example for the each measurement scale (nominal, ordinal, binary, continuous). b) Display the frequency distribution of the variable “Education level of elders” graphically. [You may use computer or hand drawing] c) Name a graphical display for the frequency distribution of the variable “Age of elders”. d) Can you plot the chart you suggest in (c) using the information from Table 1? Why or why not? 2.
In each of the following comparisons, choose the descriptive statistics (mean, median, SD, coefficient of variation, standard score, inter‐quartile range) that is the most preferable to you. Justify your answer. a) To compare the dispersion of the salary between a group of nurses (responded in HK$) and a group of doctors (responded in HK$) b) To compare the dispersion of the salary between a group of nurses (responded in HK$) and a group of doctors (responded in US$) c) To compare the salary (in HK$) of a nurse registered in 1989 and another nurse registered in 2009. d) To compare the salary of a nurse (responded in HK$) registered in 1989 and another nurse (responded in US$) registered in 2009. The full mark of the first assignment of “Introduction to Statistics” course is 100, students will get a zero score if they do not hand in assignment. The following table shows the summary statistics of the score of the first assignment of a sample of 25 part‐time nursing students: Mean Standard Error Median Mode Standard Deviation Sample Variance Kurtosis Skewness Range Minimum Maximum Sum Count Confidence Level(95.0%) 67.68

a) What is the population of interest? b) What is the measurement scale of the score of the first assignment? c) Estimate a 95% confidence interval for the mean score of the first assignment. If the class claimed that the assignment was too difficult that they could hardly reach an excellent grade (86 marks). Do you think the course teacher will agree or not? d) Now, the course teacher obtained the first assignment score of all the part‐time nursing students. She found out that the population mean score is 68.5 with a standard deviation of 12.5. Assume the score has a normal distribution, what is the probability that a student randomly selected from this class got an excellent grade (86 marks or above)? HKU/SON/NURS1516/2013

Part II: Statistics Laboratory 4.
Read “Bone Mineral Density Reference Norms for Hong Kong Chinese” (Ref# S0019) in Training Room. Complete questions Q1 – Q4. 5.
Do a test in the Test Room of the Statistics Laboratory. Choose 15 questions and select “assign1‐BNRN”. In order to get full marks on this task, you need to get a correct percentage of 100%. Any percentage below 100% will receive pro rata marks. You need to print out the final report and submit it together with the others. HKU/SON/NURS1516/2013
