Year 11 Revision Evening GCSE Food Technology Wednesday, 25th March 2015 What will the paper cover? • A mixture of Sustainable Design – year 10 work and Technical Aspects of Designing and Making – year 11 work • Paper is 1½ hours long • 80 marks Look at the revision booklet for all topics that you could be tested on. Use your revision guide to help you. • Revision list • Past papers – mark schemes: OCR Food Technology A525 Sustainability and Technical Aspects of Design and Making • Practice reading questions – exam technique • Make a list of key terms you don’t understand to discuss in class Plan ahead Testing yourself and planning ahead are the two strategies that have been proven to work - the best strategy is to plan ahead and not do all your revision on one subject in a block before moving on to the next - a technique called "distributed practice". Help at home? • Talk to your son/daughter about revision • Mealtimes could be a good time to ask about nutrients in foods, eg sources of protein, fat, fibre, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals • Ask them how sustainable are the ingredients/foods - think about air miles • Encourage them to look at food labels and packaging – can they explain all of the symbols on the packaging? What material is the packaging and is it recyclable – how do you know it is? Packaging symbols – words removed! Remember -food suitable for freezing NOT a freezer symbol AND MANY MORE ……. The 6’Rs related to Food REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE RETHINK REPAIR REFUSE Healthy Eating You must be able to explain about healthy eating and recent Government guidelines – what are schools doing to promote a healthy lifestyle? What are the effects of a diet that is high in saturated fats, sugar and salt? Look in your revision guide for help. Be prepared for a range of questions on healthy eating. Don’t forget the importance of exercise! The design question cont’d Students might be asked to design a new product for a shop/farm shop to promote the use of: UK grown produce Seasonal summer fruits or vegetables Creative dishes Nutritious products You could test the student on seasonal fruits or vegetables to prepare for this type of question Revising on the go – home or away! • Students will be encouraged to photograph revision notes and therefore can access them at any time on their phone – mindmaps are useful for this. However, we will be practicing a number of these in school. Finally – find a method that suits your preferred learning style… And remember.. After school revision is available on Wednesdays 3.15 – 4-15 pm The written examination is on Monday, 1st June at 1pm.
