Kinds of Verbs

Every sentence has a verb
A verb tells what the subject does, has, is or feels
They express action or being
A verb expresses action (physical or mental) or
being
• Ex) Ed and Iris raise Vegetables
• Ex) They feel happy
Action Verb
• An action verb tells what the subject has or
does
• It can express physical or mental action
• Example of physical action: run and look
• Example of mental action: think and dream
Being Verb
• Does not refer to action but describes a state
of being.
• It tells what the subject is or feels
• Examples) be, feel, appear, become, seem,
sound, stay, taste, look

Linking Verbs
• A verb that expresses being is called a LINKING
verb
• It is the glue that links the subject of a
sentence to the predicate (describes the
subject)
• Ex) The bird looks feathery
• The bird = feathery
• Ex 2) Pepper tastes spicy
Food Review
• Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the two Thanksgiving dishes below.
Use both linking verbs and action verbs (at least five of each). Exchange paragraphs
with a partner and list and label the linking and action verbs.
