Instructions
 What privacy issues does biotechnology raise?
Should scientists be able to make any change they wish?
what should we make of a future world in which authorities
might use genetics to decide a person’s schooling, job
prospects,
and even his or her legal rights?
I Do- Listen Carefully to Teacher
Instructions
Profits and Privacy
Patenting Life
• A patent is a legal tool that gives an
individual or company the exclusive
right to profit from its innovations for a
number of years.
• new machines and devices, molecules
and biotechnology procedures can be
patented.
But sometimes patent disputes have
slowed research that might be beneficial.
That was the case with provitamin Aenriched golden rice
Genetic Privacy
• DNA can reveal private information,
including ethnic heritage, the chances of
developing certain diseases, and
evidence for criminal cases.
• to keep personal genetic legal experts
will debate ways information safe and
confidential. No one wants to be denied a
job or an education because of
conclusions someone else might make
about his or her intelligence or
personality based on DNA
I Do- Listen Carefully to Teacher
Instructions
Profits and Privacy
-Most of the research in genetic engineering is done by private
companies.
-They patent their findings and inventions to protect their
investment and make a profit.
-The patents block other scientists from pursuing certain lines of
research.
Proponents of genetically modified foods argue that:
-GM crops are better, safer, and higher yielding than conventional crops.

Safety of Transgenic Organisms
 What are some of the pros and cons of transgenic organisms?
• There is a lot of controversy concerning foods that have had their
DNA altered through genetic engineering.
• While nearly half of all GM crops today are grown in the US,
farmers around the world are now using GM technology.
• Are the foods from GM crops the same as those prepared from
traditionally bred crops, and how will this new area of research
affect the environment?

Arguments for GM Foods
• GM crops are better, safer, and higher yielding than conventional
crops.
-GM crops require less land and energy to grow,
-Insecticides need not be applied to insect-resistant strains.
-Careful studies have provided no support for concerns about the
safety of GM crops.

Safety of Transgenic Organisms
Arguments Against GM Foods
• No long-term studies have been made of the potential
hazards.(maybe appear in the future). New efforts to develop
genetically modified animal food products, such as
salmon,and beef.
The safety of GM crops has been neither adequately tested
for long-term use, nor regulated.
Patents on GM seeds may force small farmers out of
business.
The resistance of GM plants to insects may harm beneficial
insect species.
Resistance to herbicides may result in the overuse of toxic
chemicals.
Some states have introduced legislation to require that GM
foods be labeled.

• What are some of the ethical issues
around new biotechnology?
I Do- Listen Carefully to Teacher
Instructions
Ethics of the New Biology
Biotechnology has given us the ability to
know ourselves more and
more.
With this knowledge,however, comes
responsibility.You’ve
seen how easy it is to move genes from
one organism to another. For
example, the GFP.(gene(contributed to
our understanding of cells and proteins)

Ethics of the New Biology
Conecting to the real life
if new research in biotechnology
enabled us to cure hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, or
other genetic diseases.
The technology now exists to eliminate mitochondrial
diseases by transferring a zygote nucleus into the egg
cytoplasm of a third person.
I Do- Listen Carefully to Teacher
Instructions
What will be the consequences if biologists develop the ability
to clone human beings by making identical copies of their
cells?
These are questions that society must understand and deal
with.
The goal of biology is to gain a better understanding of
the nature of life.
As our knowledge increases, however, so does our ability to manipulate the genetics of living things, including
ourselves.

Real-Life ApplicationHow do we use the science we learned today?
The video introduces students to the historical context, scientific
procedures and social controversy surrounding the emerging medical
technologies of gene therapy and gene editing, including CRISPR Cas-9.
Tracing the progression of discoveries and setbacks that have charted the
growth of medical biotechnology in recent decades, it combines complex
scientific explanation with engaging interviews of patients and
researchers. Useful as a way to introduce any lesson on medical
biotechnology, the video also sets up a class discussion on the varying
risks and prospects of gene therapy vs. gene editing, as well as the
potential ethical challenges and public fears associated with
biotechnology.

1. How researchers are pioneering the medical applications of
biotechnology.
2. How gene therapy and gene editing represent different
approaches to curing diseases.
Science Literacy Journey
Let’s start to read, write, listen and speak!
Read and discuss the following questions
with your teacher :
What is your opinion about the use of GM crops
in agriculture, as well as the development of new
GM crops? Cite evidence from your research and
use logical reasoning to construct an argument
in support of your opinion.
