5-15-2017 Dear Parents, I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up-to-date on the subject of asbestos in regards to our school. As some of you are new to our school since our last notice, I am including a little background information in order to give some context to the subject. In the late 1980’s the Environmental Protection Agency developed various guidelines covering asbestos in buildings. These included inspecting our facility for materials containing asbestos, assessing their condition, developing a management plan for ensuring that these materials do not represent health hazards to building occupants, and notifying our parents and staff of these activities. As is common with structures such as ours, asbestos-containing materials were used in the insulation of some of the plumbing pipes, boiler and hot water tanks, etc. According to the EPA, as long as these materials are in good condition they represent no health hazards. We are fortunate that we do not have the quantity of asbestos containing material, nor the less manageable type of applications (such as sprayed-on acoustical materials), that have been found at other facilities. The original inspection and development of a management plan were done as required. Following is an update of additional actions taken since our last notification: We have continued to monitor the materials containing asbestos in our facility through periodic six-month inspections. They continue to be found in a well-maintained and safe condition. We had some pipe insulation removed from a steam line in one of the boy’s dorm rooms of the main building as part of a pipe replacement project in that area. Our usual asbestos abatement contractor in Portland performed the removal services for us. For additional information or details on these activities, a copy of the Management Plan remains on file in the Business Manager’s office. Sincerely, John Fry Deputy Estates Manager
