E Grade Staff Nurse/ MTO2 – Day Surgery Theatres
1. GENERAL INFORMATION

£21,699.40 - £25,511.00 pa inclusive
Annual Leave:
27 days per annum plus Bank Holidays
Hours:
37.5 hours
Superannuation:
6% of salary (optional)
Qualification:
RN Level 1
ENB 182 / 183 or advanced diploma in anaesthetic nursing
2. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
In accordance with the Trust’s Terms and Conditions of Employment as laid down in
the relevant Trust Handbooks. All staff are expected to participate in internal rotation to
night duty, weekend cover and 'on call' systems as required.
3. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Theatre Manager, Team Leader, Sisters, Charge Nurses and other nursing staff, nurse
teachers, ancillary, clerical, medical and paramedical staff.

4. JOB SUMMARY
The post holder will: I)
Be responsible for the day to day management of the anaesthetic/recovery room
and participate in the departments’ administration as required.
ii)
be responsible for the assessment of care needs; the development of
programmes of care and their implementation and evaluation; and
iii)
be expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision.
5. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1
Clinical Responsibilities
5.1.1 Monitor and maintain the quality of nursing activities and achieve the prescribed
standards of nursing care set for the department.
5.1.2 Maintain individualised nursing care according to guidance provided by the
Professional Development Department and senior nursing staff.
5.1.3 Maintain effective communication with patients, nursing, ancillary, clerical,
medical & paramedical colleagues.
5.1.4 Provide counselling for patients, their relatives and nursing staff as appropriate.
5.1.5 Liase with colleagues and community staff to ensure continuity of clinical
practice.
5.1.6 Perform operating department work in accordance with agreed local policy e.g.
a) Acting as an anaesthetic member of the theatre team.
b) Providing assistance to the anaesthetist as required.
c) Co-operating with appropriate departmental staff to ensure correct
positioning of patient for operative procedure.
d) Co-operating with appropriate departmental staff to ensure prompt collection
and dispatch of specimens.
e) Checking, witnessing and administering controlled drugs.
f) Co-operating with appropriate departmental and ward staff in sending for
patients to the operating department.
g) Participating in the post anaesthetic care of the patients.
h) Advising the Team Leader/Sister/Charge Nurse/ODP's of proposed changes
in the order of operating lists.
i) Participating in pre and postoperative visits when required in accordance with
theatre policy.
5.1.7 Implementing safety measures in relation to:
Patient positioning. Swabs, instruments, needle count. Storage and
administration of blood and drugs. Ionising. Static electricity, explosion hazards
and fires.
5.1.8 Perform decontamination of instruments, medical devices, and the enviroment,
effectively and safely, in accordance to local Trust and National Policies,
regarding the decontamination, transport and storage of sterile and non-sterile
medical devices and the decontamination of the enviroment.
5.2
Managerial Responsibilities
5.2.1 Exercise professional accountability as guided by the NMC Code of Professional
Conduct.
5.2.2 Act as an effective role model.
5.2.3 Regularly take charge of the anaesthetic/recovery room in the absence of the
person who has continuing responsibility.
5.2.4 Assist with the effective planning of an off duty when required.
5.2.5 Inform the Team Leader of any activity in the Department which affects patient
care.
5.2.6 Ensure that nursing procedures and policies are followed.
5.2.7 Maintain an awareness of clinical and professional developments in nursing and
participate in nursing research. Attend relevant study periods when nominated.
5.2.8 Participate in the induction / orientation of new staff.
5.2.9 Provide support, guidance and counselling for junior nursing staff, trainee ODP's
and learner nurses.
5.2.10 Assist in maintaining the correct environment for teaching nurses and be aware
of ENB requirements.
5.2.11 Demonstrate procedures and supervise qualified and unqualified staff.
5.2.12 Refer accidents / incidents and complaints to the Team Leader.
5.2.13 To use resources both effectively and efficiently
5.2.14 Assist in the collection of necessary data e.g. Korner, MAPS.
5.2.15 Undertake any other reasonable duty as directed to ensure the smooth running
of the department.

9. NO SMOKING POLICY
We are a no smoking hospital which does not allow smoking at work except in
designated areas.
10. UKCC REGISTRATION
It is the individual responsibility of every registered nurse, midwife and health visitor, to
ensure registration with NMC is kept up to date. Failure to do so means that a
registered nurse, midwife or health visitor cannot continue to be employed with the
Hospital as a registered nurse, midwife or health visitor.
11. CHILD PROTECTION ACT
As this post involves substantial access to children the Trust is entitled to check with
the police for the existence and content of any criminal record. If a criminal record is
identified a decision will be made by the Trust as to its relevancy. Failure to declare a
conviction, caution or bind over may lead to an offer of employment being withdrawn or
disciplinary action which could include summary dismissal. You may commence work
prior to completion of our search of criminal records. However, police notification of
any relevant criminal records will result in disciplinary action being taken against you
which may result in termination of your contract. Alternatively you may, without any
prejudice to your offer of this post, wait until all clearances have been made prior to
commencing with us. Either way please complete section A of the enclosed police
check form and return it to me as soon as possible.
12. SECURITY
It is the responsibility of all employees to work within the security policies and
procedures of the Whittington Hospital to protect the patients, staff and visitors and the
property of the Trust. This duty applies both to the specific work area of the individual
and to the Hospital in general.
13. METHOD OF PAYMENT
Payment of salary / wage is made into a bank account or Building Society account by
direct bank systems. Details of a Bank Account or Building Society account will be
required on the first day at work. There is no facility for any other form of payment.
